Will Coronavirus Impact Your Cat?

To be clear, our pets cannot transmit coronavirus to us. However, coronavirus is a virus that has been around for decades and, in cats, is called Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a viral disease. This is NOT a form of the current "novel coronavirus" also known as COVID-19.

Will Coronavirus Impact Your Cat?

You won't become infected or ill if you hug, cuddle and play with your cat. The way coronavirus may impact your cat is he may not be accustomed to you being home all day and that could cause anxiety because it is a change in their routine.

How can you keep your cat entertained and alleviate his anxiety when you're home with him all day?

We have some tips:

  • Playtime. Cats love to play, pounce and chase. Give them a catnip filled toy and toss it so he can chase it and pounce on it. Feather toys on strings are also popular.
  • Snuggle. Not all cats like to snuggle, but if yours does, then give her what she wants!
  • A box to play in. When is the last time you gave your cat a box or even a paper bag to play in? They love it! Toss in some catnip, scratch the side and let him roll around and chase after your fingers where you're scratching.
  • Sprinkle catnip on the cat tree. Your kitty will eat it, roll around in it, then probably fall asleep on it.
Cats, just like dogs and humans, thrive on routine and if you've been home for months and now might be going back to work you should ease your kitty back into the new routine.
